Sunset at Hikkaduwa beach

Hikkaduwa fascinates the travelers with its charming beauty of the golden sand and the warm climate. Being the first marine sanctuary established in Sri Lanka in 1979 it provides habitat for number of rare living species. It was declared a National Park (the second marine national park in Sri Lanka) in 2002 considering the importance of protecting its invincible biodiversity.

The most valuable gift given by mother nature to Hikkaduwa is its most beautiful fringing coral reef. The climatic conditions around Hikkaduwa sea is very appropriate for growing of the coral polyps. Warm shallow water and the smooth flock gave them the opportunity to grow in vivid shades.

This natural beauty has confronted so many annoyance due to natural as well as human activities. The live coral reef is bleached now due to the 1998 El -Nino effect and the Tsunami hit on 26th of December 2004.
The main attraction of Hikkaduwa nowadays is giant sea turtles who use to visit beach all the day. Tourists have a golden opportunity to observe this creature in its natural habitat and feed them with some sea weeds. This would be an amazing, remarkable experience for children as well.
